St Genesis
St Genesis is a Zambian gospel artist based in Lusaka whose musical journey began in 1996 in Chipata. His passion for music started after being exposed to rap by Golden Mukelabai, a rapper, DJ, and radio personality at Radio Maria in Chipata. Inspired by this influence, he began developing his musical talent alongside his friend Ken Ox Ray, and together they formed a group called The Guest Buddies Crew. In his early years, they performed at youth events such as Teen Time and variety shows, with the Chipata Tennis Club being one of their main performance venues. Before accessing professional studios, they recorded their music using simple radio cassette tapes.
In 1998, St Genesis had his first professional recording at Radio Maria, where he collaborated with The LadiBo Squad to record a radio jingle. In 2000, after moving to Luanshya, he participated in a major rap competition held at Cosy Club, competing against several well-known rappers including Face, Town Dog, Judgmental, Radical, Mario Gee, and the Hot Gemo Crew. His talent stood out and he was crowned the winner of the competition.
In 2001, he worked with the late Daniel Umwana Wansansa on a song titled “Luanshya Ikabwela,” which was created to give hope to miners during the time when the mines had closed. In 2002, he recorded a dance-ragga song titled “Alangizi” at Saint Franciscan Studio in Ndola. The song addressed a social issue involving traditional marriage teachings and received notable airplay on Radio Ichengelo.
As time went on, St Genesis transitioned fully into gospel music, where he now expresses his faith through different musical styles including rap, kalindula, amapiano, rumba, and R&B. His inspiration comes from his church background, where he began singing at a young age with his elder sister Rhoda and niece Mali. Later, while living in Kaoma, he joined the United Church of Zambia choir, becoming the youngest member of the group.
Some of his known songs include “Luanshya Ikabwela,” “Alangizi,” “Twakatane,” and “Kula Umone” featuring Kaff Dee. The song “Twakatane,” which encourages unity among Zambians, has received airplay on ZNBC and can also be found on YouTube.
Throughout his career, St Genesis has collaborated with several artists including Kaff Dee, Cathy Zulu, Cathy The Voice, Passy, Tempele Shekina, Venture (Malawi), and Tee Flame (South Africa). He is also currently working on new music with Kafaxy from Malawi.
Despite challenges such as limited time and resources, St Genesis continues to pursue his passion for music and ministry. Today, he mainly ministers through music in churches and is preparing to release more songs while working toward building a setup that will allow him to perform live with instruments in the future.
